The Scarlet Letter was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, American novelist who is one of the most important writers of the American romantic narrative. Because of his literary vocation, he had economic problems, since his works did not give him enough money to live , he wrote some books such as Fanshawe, The daughter of Rapaccini or The Faun of Marble.
This book was published in 1850 and It is considered a masterpiece and a classic moral novel.
It is set in a village in New England. Hester Prynne is a young woman that gives birth to a child with a man that it’s not her husband.
She thinks that her husband is dead but he is not. He changes his identity for her not to know that he us back. When he sees her wearing an A in her dress, he starts looking for her lover. When he discovers that his lover was Arthur Dimmesdle he torments him. Arthur becomes ill because he feels guilty.
At the end, he confesses he was her lover and dies. She travels to Europe with her daughter Pearl and some years later, Hester goes back to the village and dies there.
She is buried next to Dimmesdale. Both share a single tombstone, which has a scarlet “A” written on it.
In my opinion, it’s a sad story but it’s full of examples of an unfair society that doesn’t accept other people´s lives and it’s placed in another century so it would be interesting to read it to understand how people thought in the past and what has changed .
